Site Specific Public Art Installed & Nesting Furniture Deployed in Santa Monica
Over the weekend, Here LA installed a site-specific art piece that sits atop the bluff in Palisades Park, Santa Monica. The piece consists of bright chartreuse, bent metal letters attached to the existing fence. You can see through the letters to the Pacific Ocean and views west. The phrase, “We Are A Drop. We Are The Ocean” is inspired by Japanese writer Ryunosuke Akutagawa and celebrates Santa Monica, its people, and the unique location of the site adjacent to the ocean.
In addition to the new art, Here LA unveiled a set of colorful nesting street furniture that unpacks and inhabits the streetspace, providing people of all ages a place to sit and play. We were testing the furniture as a prototype for future public space installations.
On Saturday we hosted a community pop-up that asked people what their hopes and dreams are for Ocean Avenue. The street, which connects Downtown Santa Monica with the coast line, is a wide and busy arterial. People voted for their desired street improvements during the event using powder Holi balls thrown to the ground. Check out the picts to see the color bonanza as it was getting started.
As seen on Uncover LA, LATF, LAist, SoCal City Kids, and heard on KCRW.
