Downey Pedestrian Plan

Walk Downey is the community’s long-range vision for the future of walking in the City of Downey. This Pedestrian Plan prioritizes pedestrian safety and comfort, creates a walkable environment through neighborhood and infrastructure investment, and develops a high-quality pedestrian network in this vehicular-oriented city.

HERE designed the city’s pedestrian wayfinding system, including various wayfinding sign typologies and placement guidelines. We also oversaw a creative and interactive art installation that helped the planning team define where people most want to be able to walk to and from, with colorful yarn strung from wall to wall indicating origins and destinations. Information gathered was then mapped and quantified to justify project recommendations.

The design team partnered with local Stay Gallery, which hosted the installation at their storefront in the heart of Downtown Downey. The interactive art installation used an immersive and playful design to reach new voices, increase feedback received, and educate community members about pedestrian planning.
