HERE brought creative outreach oversight and design to the Vision Zero planning process with the City of Long Beach. Given the challenging and often technical nature of Vision Zero, we designed a community dialogue where people could share stories at a roving “Stories Bench.” The bench was designed with an integrated microphone and it gathered stories from the Long Beach community about people’s personal experiences relating to street safety at four pop-ups.

The colorful bench was coupled with educational materials and interactive stations where people could learn more and leave feedback. Once the bench had finished its first tour, it was then deployed around the city again, this time playing the collected community stories on an embedded speaker so that people could hear what others had to say. HERE also designed temporary eye-catching signage placed at high-collision intersections to teach people about the plan and teach people about the plan and engage feedback.
